What is Remicade Used For?

Remicade is FDA-approved for the treatment of several chronic conditions. It is widely prescribed for adult and pediatric patients (ages 6+) for the following indications:

Crohn’s Disease: Reduces signs and symptoms and induces clinical remission in moderate to severe active Crohn’s disease.
Ulcerative Colitis: Helps induce and maintain clinical remission and mucosal healing.
Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA): Used in combination with methotrexate to reduce signs and symptoms of moderate to severe active RA.
Ankylosing Spondylitis: Improves physical function and reduces inflammation in the spine.
Psoriatic Arthritis: Inhibits the progression of structural damage and improves physical function.
Plaque Psoriasis: Treatment for adult patients with chronic severe plaque psoriasis who are candidates for systemic therapy.

How Does Remicade Work?

Remicade belongs to a class of drugs known as Tumor Necrosis Factor (TNF) blockers. In people with autoimmune diseases, the body produces too much TNF-alpha, a protein that causes inflammation and damage to bones, cartilage, and tissue. Remicade binds to TNF-alpha and blocks its action, thereby reducing inflammation and halting disease progression.
Administration

Remicade is administered via intravenous (IV) infusion. This process typically takes about 2 hours and must be performed by a healthcare professional in a clinic or infusion center. The dosage and frequency of infusions depend on the specific condition being treated and the patient’s weight.
Important Safety Information

Prescription Only: Remicade is a potent medication available only by prescription.
Immune System Effects: Remicade can lower the ability of your immune system to fight infections. Patients should be tested for Tuberculosis (TB) before starting treatment.
Common Side Effects: May include respiratory infections, headache, coughing, or stomach pain.
Contraindications: Do not use if you have moderate to severe heart failure or are allergic to infliximab or any murine (mouse) proteins.
